Planning a heritage team day in Singapore: a guide for HR and finance
A heritage walk is one of the easiest staff outings to run well: no venue to book, nothing to win or lose, and a meal at the end. Here is how to plan one, and the tax points your finance team will ask about before they sign off the budget.
Keep it to a half day, about 2.5 km on foot with stops, ending at a shared meal. Make it open to all staff. IRAS treats sponsored group outings as a benefit that is generally not taxable for employees, and a GST-registered company can generally claim input tax on the outing with a valid tax invoice. Benefits for family members are treated differently.
Why a heritage walk works for teams
Most team-building days ask people to perform. A walk asks them to notice. Colleagues who rarely talk end up comparing what their grandmothers cooked, which dialect their family spoke at home, or which street their parents grew up on. The conversation does the bonding for you.
It also suits a mixed group. There is no fitness test, no competition and no alcohol needed, and it works for new joiners and long-serving staff alike.
A sample half-day plan
Our Singapore trail starts in Katong, among the pastel Peranakan shophouses, and ends at a hawker table. It is about 2.5 km on foot.
| Time | What happens |
|---|---|
| 9.00 | Meet at the shophouses. A short story to set the scene: the Peranakan women who ran these homes, their beadwork, kebaya and cooking. |
| 9.30 | Walk the row houses. Look for the ceramic tiles, carved pintu pagar half doors and plaster birds and flowers. |
| 10.15 | A family kueh shop. Tasting stop, and time to talk. |
| 11.00 | Optional: a private Peranakan heirloom collection, by appointment only. |
| 12.00 | End over a bowl of Katong laksa, with the noodles cut short so you only need a spoon. |
Opening hours change, so check each stop the week before.
Planning checklist
- Group size. Split anything over about 15 people into smaller groups that start 15 minutes apart, so everyone can hear the stories and the shops are not crowded.
- Pace and access. Ask early about mobility needs. Plan rest stops in the shade and note where the nearest taxi stand or MRT station is.
- Weather. Start early to beat the midday heat. Have a wet-weather plan, such as swapping an outdoor stretch for an indoor stop.
- Food. Collect dietary needs in advance. Hawker centres make halal, vegetarian and other choices easy for a mixed group.
- Getting there. Public transport is simplest. Staff can tap in on the MRT and buses with a contactless bank card or phone.
- Who is invited. Decide whether family members are included. It changes the tax and GST treatment, as below.
Budget and tax: what finance should check
The points below are what finance teams usually ask about before approving a staff outing. They come from current IRAS guidance; check the source pages for your own case.
Income tax for employees
- IRAS lists sponsored group outings among the benefits-in-kind granted administrative concession, so they are generally not taxable for employees.
- The outing should be available to all staff. That condition is what the concession rests on.
- Small gifts at the event are exempt if they are not substantial. As a guide, S$200 or less per gift is not substantial; above that, the full value is taxable.
- Subsidised overseas holiday trips are not covered by the concession.
GST, if the company is GST-registered
- IRAS treats goods and services provided to employees at company outings and team-bonding activities as having a close nexus to the business, so input tax is generally claimable.
- Keep a valid tax invoice addressed to the company. For food and drink, a simplified tax invoice is accepted for purchases up to S$1,000 including GST.
- Input tax on benefits for staff family members is not claimable.
- If staff pay part of the cost, that recovery is generally subject to output GST.

After the walk
Ask each person for one thing they learned about a colleague, not about the street. That is usually the part people remember, and it tells you whether the day did its job.
Frequently asked questions
Is a company heritage walk taxable for employees in Singapore?
IRAS lists sponsored group outings among the benefits-in-kind granted administrative concession, so they are generally not taxable for employees, as long as the outing is open to all staff. Subsidised overseas holiday trips are excluded.
Can a GST-registered company claim input tax on a staff outing?
Generally yes. IRAS treats goods and services provided to employees at company outings and team-bonding activities as having a close nexus to the business. Keep a valid tax invoice addressed to the company. Input tax on benefits for staff family members is not claimable.
How long should a heritage team walk be?
A half day works for most teams: about 2.5 km on foot with stops, ending at a meal. That keeps the pace comfortable for mixed fitness levels and leaves time to talk.
Are small gifts at the event taxable?
IRAS treats gifts that are not substantial as exempt. As a guide, a gift worth S$200 or less is not substantial. If a gift is worth more, its full value is taxable.
